Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we are asked most about smart heating, home automation, energy and our approach.
About Bluefeed and our approach
What exactly does Bluefeed do?
Bluefeed helps private individuals and organisations with smart, sustainable solutions for heating, energy and home automation. We advise on, supply and install smart thermostats, underfloor heating, infrared heating and smart home systems, among other things, and make sure everything works together reliably. We always look at the whole: not separate gadgets, but a system that suits your home or building and combines comfort, convenience and energy savings. Whether it is one smart thermostat or a fully integrated system, we think along with you from advice to handover and aftercare.
Do you only work for private customers or also for businesses?
Both. We work for homeowners who want to make their home more comfortable and sustainable, and for entrepreneurs and organisations who want to make their building or energy use smarter. For private customers the focus is often on comfort, convenience and lower energy costs; for businesses we also look at things like energy management, scalability and insight into consumption. We always tailor the approach and technology to your situation, whether you are making a terraced house more sustainable or want to make a business building smarter.
Is Bluefeed a quote comparison site?
No. Bluefeed is an installation company from Utrecht. We draw up your quote ourselves and carry out the work, together with regular subcontractors.
Do you work with your own installers or with subcontractors?
We do the work ourselves and with regular subcontractors: electricians, plumbers and specialists in smart heating and home automation. For work that legally requires certification, such as work on gas boilers and on the refrigerant of an air conditioner, we bring in certified partners. Bluefeed prepares your quote itself.
Do you give advice first before anything is installed?
Yes. We like to start with a clear picture of your home or building, your wishes and your budget. Based on that, we advise a solution that fits, so you don't install more than you need. That limits the chance of surprises afterwards, and you know in advance what to expect in terms of work, planning and costs.
Smart thermostats and heating
Which smart thermostats do you install?
We work with established, proven brands in smart heating, such as tado° and Honeywell evohome. If you currently have a Google Nest, we replace it with tado°. Which one suits you best depends on your central heating system, your wishes and how you want to control the system. Some thermostats excel at simple operation, others at smart automation or controlling the temperature room by room. We are happy to advise you and choose the system that fits your home and the way you live.
Does a smart thermostat work with my existing boiler?
In most cases, yes. Most modern boilers can be combined with a smart thermostat. We check the connection and the type of boiler to assess in advance whether the combination is suitable. If your boiler uses a specific protocol or an unusual connection, we look for the right solution or thermostat. That way you know where you stand before we start.
What is the difference between underfloor heating, infrared heating and a normal radiator?
Underfloor heating spreads heat evenly through the floor and works comfortably at lower temperatures, which makes it a good match for sustainable sources such as a heat pump. Infrared heating heats objects and people directly instead of the air, which makes it handy for rooms you want to heat quickly or only temporarily. A normal radiator mainly heats the air and responds quickly, but works at higher temperatures. Which solution makes sense depends on your home, insulation and use; we help you make the right choice.
Can I have electric underfloor heating installed?
Yes, we install electric (underfloor) heating. Whether it is a good choice for your situation is something we look at together, as it depends on the room, how it is used and the existing installation. Electric underfloor heating works well, for example, as extra heating in a bathroom or during a renovation where water-based underfloor heating is difficult. We discuss the running costs and options beforehand, so you make a choice that matches your comfort and your budget.
Home automation and smart home
What exactly is home automation or a smart home?
Home automation means that devices in your home or building can communicate with each other and with you, for example heating, lighting and sun shading. This lets you control everything centrally and smartly, often remotely via an app, for more comfort, convenience and energy savings. Think of lighting that follows the day, heating that is only on when needed, or scenes that control several devices at once with one press of a button. A well set-up smart home mainly works in the background: it makes your day easier without you having to keep an eye on it.
Can you link different systems together?
That is a key part of our work. We make sure separate devices and systems, such as thermostats, lighting and sensors, work together reliably in a setup that fits how you use your home or business. Whether brands and systems that don't seem to match at first glance can still be linked, we assess case by case. Where the systems allow it, you control everything from one place instead of separate apps.
Can I control my smart home remotely?
In most set-ups, yes. Many smart systems can be controlled via an app, so you can, for example, adjust the heating before you get home or quickly check whether the lights are off. You can often also set up notifications or automatic rules, so you do not have to think of everything yourself. We match the options to the chosen equipment and to how much you want to control yourself.
Energy and sustainability
How do you help me save energy?
By controlling heating and appliances more smartly, you use energy when it makes sense and avoid waste. Together with good insulation and sensible settings, that gives comfort with less unnecessary use. Think of heating that turns down automatically when nobody is home, or appliances that run when power is cheaper or self-generated. We look at what has the most effect in your situation, so you invest in measures that suit you.
Do I really need a home battery or solar panels?
No. Smart control can also pay off without a battery or solar panels, for example because you use your heating and appliances more efficiently. If you do have them, we can set up the system so you make better use of your own generated power and feed less back to the grid. And if you are thinking of expanding later, we take that into account in the design. Net metering (salderen) ends on 1 January 2027. Whether a home battery pays off after that depends on how much you feed back, your feed-in charges and your energy contract; we work it out honestly for your situation. We advise what suits your home, goals and budget.
Can you also advise on a future-proof energy system?
Yes. We are happy to think along about how to make your energy setup smarter and more sustainable step by step, so you benefit now and are ready for the future. You don't have to do everything at once: we can set a logical order in which each step builds on the previous one. That reduces the chance of double costs and keeps you in control of your investment. What is sensible depends on your situation and wishes, and we look at that together.
Installation and service
How does an installation with Bluefeed work?
You receive the quote by email and accept it online. For jobs over € 1,000 excluding VAT, the deposit comes first; then we schedule the installation at a time that suits you. We or our regular specialists install and test the equipment and explain how everything works.
Make sure someone is at home, that the places where we work are clear and accessible (boiler, radiators, meter cupboard, manifold) and that you have your wifi name and password to hand. Anything else that needs to be ready is listed in your quote. Afterwards we tidy up our work area and check together that everything works.
Can I come to you for service or questions after the installation?
Certainly. After the installation you can still contact us with questions or for support, for example if you want to change or expand something, or if something doesn't work as expected. Feel free to get in touch and we will help you further. You can also take a look first at the faults by brand.
Do you also do small electrical and lighting jobs?
Yes. Think of replacing spotlights, putting lights on one switch or repairing lighting. We charge our hourly rate (€ 90.75 including VAT, minimum 1 hour) plus call-out costs.
How do I request a quote or appointment?
Easily, via our contact page. Leave your details and your question, and we will contact you to discuss the options. Tell us briefly what you are looking for and what kind of home or building it is. Please also send photos of the situation (for example the meter cupboard, the boiler with the pipes underneath, the radiator valves or the location) to contact@bluefeed.nl; then we can often prepare a quote straight away. For tado° you can do this directly via the tado request.
Costs, quote & payment
Can I supply my own equipment?
We only install equipment that you buy through us. That way we know exactly what is being installed, and you can come to us for the warranty.
What does an on-site survey cost?
We often prepare the quote based on your photos. If that is not enough, we visit to assess the situation: the site survey. The site survey costs € 139.15 including VAT. If you then accept the quote, we offset 1 working hour against the job. If the job does not go ahead, we invoice the site survey as a separate service.
Do you work with fixed prices or on a time-and-materials basis?
As standard we work on a time-and-materials basis: the hours actually spent at our hourly rate, plus materials. If we agree a fixed price, that price applies. The hours in a quote are an estimate; any extra work is agreed with you in advance.
Do you ask for a deposit?
For jobs over € 1,000 excluding VAT (€ 1,210 including VAT) we ask for a 50% deposit on acceptance; you pay the rest after completion. What applies to your job is clearly stated in the quote.
What are your payment terms?
Private customers pay within 14 days of the invoice date, business customers within 30 days.
How long is a quote valid?
The price in the quote is fixed for 30 days. After that you can always come back to us; we will then review the price.
Working area & call-out charges
Which region do you work in?
We are based in Utrecht and work in Utrecht and the wider area, including the Amsterdam region. Work further away is possible by arrangement. Let us know your location and we will tell you what we can do for you.
What about call-out charges?
For each visit we charge call-out costs from Utrecht: up to and including 20 km € 48.40, and beyond that up to 70 km € 108.90, including VAT (for example Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague). Further away on request. The amount is always stated in your quote.
Warranty, faults & service
What warranty do you give?
If you buy the equipment through us, you have the statutory guarantee with us. On top of that, the manufacturer's warranty applies; it is stated in your quote.
We give a 1-year guarantee on our installation work; a mistake on our part we put right free of charge. Your statutory rights always remain in place.
What happens if there is a fault?
If the repair is covered by the warranty or your statutory rights, you pay nothing. If the cause is outside our control (for example a new internet provider, a different router or a changed wifi password), we carry out the reconfiguration or reconnection as a paid service, at our hourly rate plus call-out costs. Always after consultation. Want to check first yourself? See the faults by brand.
What is not covered by the warranty?
Not covered by the warranty are defects caused by incorrect use, insufficient maintenance, changes or work by third parties, external causes (such as a network or provider change or a power cut) and normal wear and tear. Reconfiguring or reconnecting equipment after such changes is carried out as a paid service.
Energy, solar panels, batteries & charging
Do you also install solar panels, home batteries and charging stations?
Yes. Alongside smart heating and home automation, we install solar panels, energy storage (home batteries) and EV chargers. We link them to an energy management system, with the aim of using as much of your own generated power yourself as possible.
Can I get a subsidy for making my home more sustainable?
Subsidies or tax benefits are available for various sustainability measures, for example the ISDE subsidy for heat pumps. Which schemes apply to your situation and what to look out for is part of our advice process.
Business & Fieldwork
Do you also carry out maintenance and inspections on solar roofs and solar parks?
Yes. For the business market we manage and maintain solar roofs and solar farms: inspections (including Scope 12), monitoring and fault analysis, and replacing components such as inverters and optimisers. This is aimed at a safe and properly working system.
Can you control our company's energy use smartly?
Yes. With an energy management system (EMS) we map your company's consumption and smartly control the solar roof, storage and charging points, including load balancing, battery control and zero feed-in. This can limit peak loads and increase the use of your own generated power.
Safety, privacy & certification
How do you handle privacy and data security?
When choosing and setting up systems, we take the GDPR and security into account. We deliberately do not use the Tuya platform. Where possible we use encrypted connections, local processing and strict access rights. How we handle your data is explained in our privacy statement.
Are you certified for heat pumps, gas and cooling?
For work that legally requires certification, we work with certified partners. This applies to work on gas boilers (CO certification, Gas Boiler Act) and on the refrigerant of an air conditioner or heat pump (F-gases).
Cancellation & cooling-off period
What if I need to cancel an appointment?
You can cancel an appointment free of charge up to 24 hours in advance. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance, or nobody is present when we arrive, we charge the call-out fee plus one hour.
Do I have a cooling-off period as a consumer?
If you, as a consumer, enter into a contract at a distance or away from our premises, you have a 14-day cooling-off period to withdraw without giving a reason. If you explicitly ask us to start within that period, you pay a proportionate part for the work already carried out if you cancel.
